With a rich history dating back from more than 2000 years, Sri Lanka is also the cradle of Buddhism as it was introduced very early on in 3rd century BC. It is today the main religion of the country coexisting with Hindus, Muslims and Christians. Like other countries in South East, Sri Lanka was strongly influenced by colonial powers like the Dutch, Portuguese and was a colony of the British Empire between 1815 and 1948. After having struggling the past few years, tourism in Sri Lanka is on the rise in 2025 as a destination with a lot to offer.

I've been exploring Sri Lanka since 2019 across three separate visits. My first trip centered on cultural heritage sites, including the ancient mountain monastery of Mihintale, the historic capitals of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa where Sinhalese kings once ruled, and the breathtaking Lion Rock fortress at Sigiriya.
During my more recent trips in 2024 and 2025, I shifted focus toward people and street photography, capturing daily life across different regions—from the urban streets of Colombo and Kandy to the fishing communities of Negombo and Galle. I also spent time photographing in the picturesque tea country, home to the world-renowned Ceylon tea.
For wildlife photography, I've visited the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a biodiversity hotspot known for its high concentration of endemic species—particularly birds, mammals, and reptiles—as well as Kumana National Park. Throughout this trip, I'll provide personalized one-on-one coaching to help you capture the best possible images with your equipment.

Yes, there's a single supplement charge, and the tour can be arranged as a private experience for one photographer.
Most travelers visiting Sri Lanka need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arrival. This electronic visa system simplifies the entry process and can be completed entirely online.
How the ETA System Works
The ETA is a straightforward electronic authorization process:
- Complete an online application on the official website
- Pay the applicable ETA fee
- Receive approval via email
- Present the electronic authorization upon arrival in Sri Lanka
- Receive a stamp in your passport during immigration processing

As of October 2025, applying for your ETA through the official government website (https://eta.gov.lk/) is mandatory before traveling to Sri Lanka.
Free ETA for Select Countries
Citizens of China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan benefit from a visa-free regime and can obtain their ETA without paying any fees. All other nationalities must pay the standard ETA processing fee when applying.
Most travelers need to pay a fee of USD 50 for the ETA, though citizens of China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan can obtain it for free.
Yes, extensions are available upon request while you are in Sri Lanka. It is recommended to do it at the beginning of your trip at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo. The online process for extension is not always reliable.
As of October 2025, obtaining an ETA before travel is mandatory. Without it, you may be denied boarding by your airline or face entry issues at Sri Lankan immigration. Always apply online at https://eta.gov.lk/ before your trip.
While Sri Lanka does not currently require general vaccinations for entry, travelers should consult their doctor for routine vaccine updates (Tetanus, Typhoid, etc.).
The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). It's best to bring U.S. Dollars (USD) or Euros (EUR) and exchange them upon arrival at the airport which some desks with good rates. It is good to have some cash on you for your small expenses during this trip.
